These wedge prisms are used for measuring the basal area of a stand of trees. The mathematics may be tricky, but the operation is simple. Tree stems which are completely offset when viewed through the prisms are counted.

By turning through 360° in a forest, a forester will count in a number of trees.

Number counted times basal area factor = basal area (in m2/ha).

By multiplying the basal area of a plot by an average height and a form factor, the volume can be calculated. A basal area gauge factor should be selected, which will yield eight to 15 trees counted per plot.

Amber prisms provide better vision when measurement is being carried out in poor light. We stock clear basal area prisms only but if you require amber prisms or special basal area factors we are happy to obtain them.
