A brief overview of the various papers that will be presented during the Seminar Streams, on the first day of the conference, are listed below.
During Day 1 attendees are allowed to switch between streams as we understand that many of these topics are applicable to a variety jobs and fields, not just the stream they are listed under.

The New Regulations - How To Make Your Equipment Work For You |

This paper will explore some of the new technology and techniques available in Trimble Access field software and Trimble Business Centre office software to streamline the field and office procedures for cadastral survey work in terms of the Rules for Cadastral Survey 2010. While aimed at cadastral surveys in particular the ideas shared in this paper will also be of interest to all surveyors and can be utilised across the spectrum of survey operations. |

Datums, Projections and Calibrations – What Do They All Mean And How Do They Fit Together? |

This paper explains datums, projections and site calibrations in layperson terms. With GNSS surveying techniques it is imperative that surveyors, engineers and other related professionals understand how datums, projections and site calibrations inter-relate. This paper will help you polish up on your understanding without the need to complete difficult homework assignments! The paper will highlight datums and projections that are commonly used in New Zealand, including their use in the Trimble family of survey products. The second part of the paper will cover GNSS site calibrations including the use of New Zealand Vertical Datum 2009. A real-life example will be used to show the implication of decisions and assumptions that are often made. This topic generated a lot of questions and discussion last year so we have allocated 1 hour to this subject with plenty of time allocated for discussion.

We will look how to put your expertise in measurement and data analysis to work in the growing market of monitoring services. We will look at how you can expand from post processed deformation monitoring campaigns all the way to real-time systems that manage your projects and alert the operator of significant motion events. Finally we will look at combining both GNSS and optical data on a single project. GNSS provides long-range accuracy and rapid update rates. Total stations deliver precise, cost-effective measurements. We will see how GNSS technology can be used to verify the stability of total station control points. We will also see how surveyors expertise can be used to enhance monitoring practices ranging from manual observation using GNSS or optical right through to fully automated and integrated (combining optical and GNSS) monitoring solutions. |

So whether you use GPS, Optical Total Stations, spatial imaging technologies or a combination of all three this is an important session for you. The paper will explore some the new connectivity features in the platform as well as how this product will enable surveyors to always be up to date with the latest versions and development. We will look at the new features in the products and how the structure of the software will streamline survey activities in the field and interfacing back to the office. |

We will look at how you can start with entry level 2-D systems using laser guidance and build your systems into full 3-D control. Finally we will look at the data requirements for Machine Control and what to request from the Consultants. |

| This paper builds on the previous paper and takes a deep dive into the data requirements of a site using Machine Control and/or Construction survey systems. As this is a 60 minutes session there will be ample opportunity for questions and discussion on this important topic. |

| Managing machines and men; Do you know where you are going? |
|
| Vehicle tracking is now an everyday technology but the problem is that these are generalised systems often only reporting where an asset is located and when it moves and for how long. This paper takes a real world look at such a system and how this might be implemented on a specific project or on a company wide basis. We look at the components involved and how these integrate with the office application. Then look into the types of reports required and how this will allow the better management of projects and assets. |

| Construction Surveying – Why do we need customised solutions? |

| Surveying on a Construction site if quite often carried out by non-surveyors it is therefore important that any system provides the non-surveyor in site preparation, roading, mining, landfill and waste disposal the ability to quickly resolve problems on site and the flexibility to complete any task. Contractors need to track, report, validate and control workflows from receipt of initial designs to project completion.
